As we slip into Autumn, I wanted to let you know what is happening at Ann Lewis Coaching, and to share some thoughts about recent business news.

Last week saw National Stress Awareness Day in the UK. Back on Track clients are only too aware of how stressful it can be to be off-balance at work. You'll find some ideas and resources in the Newsletter.

There is also news of progress of the Back on Track book, a team effectiveness survey, and a review of "Change your Questions, Change your Life" by Marilee Adams.

Stress at work

Tools for individuals

November 1st was national Stress Awareness Day. According to the HSE's 1996 Publication, "Mental Health and Stress in the Workplace, a Guide for Employers" 360 million working days are lost annually in the U.K. at a cost of £8 billion, and half of these absences are stress-related.

I offer an on-line StressScan(TM), which provides a quick yet reliable way to identify the factors which help individuals withstand the adverse effects of daily stress. It provides a targeted information about specific lifestyle and health behaviours that might contribute to stress-related illnesses as well as an action plan for optimising well being.

I am currently offering three Stress Scans, complete with confidential personal briefings, for the price of two. On-line questionnaires must be completed before the end of November to qualify for the offer price.

My colleague Pam Thornton, of Steps2Health says, "Three factors that seem to make any situation dangerously stressful are :

  • Lack of predictability
  • Lack of control
  • Lack of outlets for frustration
These elements, when present, can make even innocuous situations stressful and produce a reaction that is completely out of proportion to the cause."

Steps2Health offers relaxing head and neck massage for employees at your premises. It's quick and easy, does not require staff to undress, and can be delivered in a lunch break - a great antidote to the post-lunch dip.

I've recommended AnnA Rushton's book, "How to cope successfully with Stress" in an earlier newsletter.

Autumn Team Survey

What do you think?

I work increasingly with teams wanting to improve their effectiveness. I would find it really helpful to know what you think about your team's performance and morale. Please take five minutes to complete a new on-line survey. It will be open until the end of November, responses are confidential, and the results will be published during December.

Book Review

Marilee Adams, "Change your Questions, Change your Life"
pond cobweb

My life is punctuated by friends and colleagues' recommending just the right books at exactly the right time. This one is a recent find, which can revolutionise the way we work and conduct our relationships.

Using Adams' QuestionThinking(TM) approach, it tells the story of Ben Knight, a high-flying executive who is struggling with a demanding new job and is about to hand in his notice. An executive coach (of course...) helps him to change the questions he is asking himself about the situation, taking him from a judgmental to a learning approach which challenges and then overturns his hithertoo ineffective approach to his team.

There is a link to an article about the book below, and you'll find links to Amazon on the website

Closing news: The website has been updated to reflect what we're currently offering, and has some new pictures.

The Back on Track book is progressing well. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed a story - they really are bringing it alive. I am aiming for publication in the middle of next year.

Meanwhile, I contribute a monthly Mentor column to Professional Fundraising magazine, and have recently published articles in Coaching at Work and the Sussex CIPD Branch newsletter.

Have a great month.

Warm wishes,

Ann Lewis
